All food businesses in Gatithini, Mukothima and Kithima in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties have been ordered shut because of a cholera outbreak.

Two people have died in two weeks and at least 35 hospitalised.

Twelve people have been admitted to hospital in Gatithini, 12 in Marimanti, six in Mukothima and five in Kathangacini.

Kenya Red Cross Society Mt Kenya region manager Gitonga Mugambi yesterday said it is educating residents about good hygiene.

One hundred cholera cases have been reported so far, he said.

“All food outlets and hotels have been closed and we are encouraging people to eat from home,” Mugambi said.

“We have distributed chlorine and aqua tablets for water treatment.”

He said the situation is not improving.

One clinical officer, two nurses, two public health officers and four health workers have been deployed to affected areas.

Mugambi said there are conflicting reports on the number of cholera cases in Meru county.

County health executive William Muraa says 10 cholera cases have been reported and one resident has been treated and discharged.

The others are undergoing treatment, he says.

“The situation is under control and we are sending teams to the ground,” Muraa said.

“We will also help the Tharaka Nithi government with medication and other items to help curb the spread of cholera.”
