A major fallout between two key Wiper party members in Mombasa is looming.

Senator Hassan Omar and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti are now embroiled in a political tussle over who will replace Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.

Both have declared interest in the governor seat.

Awiti launched his bid for the seat on Sunday at Akamba Handicraft in Changamwe.

Interestingly, his launch was concurrent with a meeting Omar, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Jomvu MP Badi Twalib were hosting at the Little Theatre Club in Mombasa.

At the meeting, Omar gave a clear indication of intent to run for governor.

He enjoys the support of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, while Awiti is said to be backed by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s supporters.

On January 8, Masinga MP Benson Mbai said the Wiper splinter group led by Mutua will not support Omar.

“When he came here, he cheated you to vote for him. We are telling you not to vote for him,” Mbai was quoted as saying.

On Sunday, Kalonzo’s allies, led by Kilonzo Jnr and Twalib, rallied behind Omar.

Omar said he may face off with Awiti at the party level or in Cord nomination.

“It is all about competitiveness. We shall decide what happens, depending on what angle is ultimately agreed upon,” he said.

On Thursday, Awiti told the Star on the phone he is friends with Omar and they are exercising their democratic rights.
