Amref Health Africa yesterday announced a plan to train more than 8,000 midwives before 2018.

This is after it received a Sh3.2 million donation from the Diplomatic Spouses Association.

Amref CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi said the donation will focus on training pre-service midwives in basic emergency care.

He said they have already trained 7,000 midwives who are able to deliver 40 babies each a year.

“Over five million people in the country depend on us, out of whom 75 per cent are women and children. Our main effort is to build a modern health system with staff with diverse skills and knowledge to handle maternal issues,” Gitahi said.
