Some 17,000 pupils and students in Meru county have received Sh3.4 million shoes in a hygiene programme.

The shoes were distributed by the Kenya Red Cross in partnership with woman representative Florence Kajuju.

Meru assistant director of education Lucy Mbae yesterday asked teachers to partner with her to improve the quality of education.

“Children face problems including poor parental care and poverty-stricken families, which may hurt their concentration,” she said.

“Teachers need to inform the community of the bursaries they can use to educate their children.”

Mbae was speaking during the shoe distribution at KK Muthangene Primary School in Tigania East.

Sanitary pads were also donated.

Kajuju said education in Tigania West needs to be improved.

“Land resources have diminished and education is the only guarantee to secure our future,” she said.

Kajuju said she will push for schools in dry zones to be gazetted as hardship areas to improve teachers’ morale.

She urged Knut and Kuppet leaders to meet the Teachers’ Service Commission to resolve the stalemate on the signing of performance contracts.

The shoe beneficiaries included 2,275 pupils in Igembe South, 3,500 in Igembe Central, 3,500 in Igembe North, 3,600 in Tigania East and 4,080 in Tigania West.
