A pregnant woman has been hospitalised after allegedly being accused of cash theft and battered by her husband in Lang'ata estate.

Justa Kawira, 22, told the Star at her hospital bed in Langata yesterday John Wachira, her husband of six years, returned home drunk on Sunday.

Wachira was arrested on Monday and released on bond, pending investigations.

Kawira said the husband claimed he had lost money in the house.

"I told him I did not steal any money but he started beating me until I fled to a friend's house, before returning on Monday after he left for work," she said.

Kawira said she found their three-year-old son alone in the house.

Wachira returned with a friend and started taking photos of their house items, she said.

"I asked him why they were taking pictures of the house but they did not talk to me. Instead, he got afraid, claiming that I was chasing his friend," she said.

Kawira said the husband punched her in the face, dragged her to the house and beat her unconscious.

"I regained my consciousness here, where doctors told me I was brought by neighbours. The doctors said my unborn baby is okay."

Kawira said she has tolerated domestic violence that is as old as their marriage.

"He has stabbed me before and I suffered a miscarriage as a result," she said.

"My parents know about my violent marriage but it's only my mother who tried to intervene. My father always says he will speak to him. I am not going back there again."

Kawira's neighbours reported the matter at Lang'ata police station.

"A police officer came and took my statement from my hospital bed," she said.

She said her husband has not visited her.

Langata police boss Elijah Mwangi said he received a complaint from Kawira and arrested the husband.

"He was released on a police bond because we had to carry out investigations," he said.

Wachira was unavailable for comment.
