Food vending along the boundary of Meru and Tharaka has been banned following a cholera outbreak, Kenya Red Cross has said.

“All food outlets and hotels have been closed and we are encouraging people to take food from their homes," Mt Kenya Region Regional Manager Gitonga Mugambi said.

"We have also issued out chlorine and aqua tabs to treat the water and contain the endemic spread of cholera."

Two people have died in two weeks following the outbreak which was reported in Gatithini, Mukothima and Kithima areas along the Meru and Tharaka border.

Mugambi said over 100 cholera-related cases have been reported in Gatithini, Mukothima and Marimanti areas.

Out of those received, 12 have been admitted in Gatithini, 12 in Marimanti, six in Mukothima and five in Kathangacini.

He said KRCS has sent one clinical officer, two nurses and two public health officers and four health workers to survey and educate residents on good hygiene.

Meru County Health Executive William Muraa said out of the 10 cases reported, one was treated and discharged while the rest - two of whom are children - have been admitted.

He said the situation is under control and teams will be dispatched to help the Tharaka Nithi county government with medication to curb the spread.
