EDUCATION CS Fred Matiang’i wants an audit of how money meant to buy primary school textbooks is used.

Yesterday, he said there are few books in primary schools, yet the government disburses millions of shillings.

Matiang’i made a surprise visit to Pandpieri Primary School in Nyalenda slum, Kisumu town, yesterday.

He condemned what he called the mismanagement of funds for textbooks.

Matiang’i told county education directors and head teachers to report how funds are spent.

Matiang’i said some education directors and head teachers collude with auditors to defraud the government.

“I will take serious action against those mismanaging funds for textbooks. Anybody found culpable will face the wrath of the government,” he said.

The CS also visited the Kisumu National Polytechnic.

He said students in slums learn in unsafe conditions.

Matiang’i said the government will ensure all primary schools comply with safety standards.

He urged county officials to inspect schools regularly.

Matiang’i urged education officials to work together to form a framework for managing schools.

The CS made a closing speech at the end of a two-day workshop for senior county education officials.

He urged education officers to share management advice among themselves.
