Robbers broke into Meru Governor Peter Munya’s home in Kaaga area on Sunday night, damaged a car window and stole a battery from one of his official vehicles.

County Director of communications Simon Kobia said police are investigating the incident, which he said was one of many.

"Recently, offices of Lands, ICT and other departments were broken into and documents and computers stolen," Kobia said.

"We don’t know why these people are following us. There could be political motives of tainting the county government's image."

Kobia said the robbers cut through live and chain link fences, unlocked the vehicle and took the battery before workers living in the house realised what was going on and alerted police.

"The Governor has called upon residents of Meru to be patient and give police time to complete investigations and ascertain whether it’s all about politics," he said.

Munya is protected during the day by four bodyguards who hand over to AP officers once he retires to his residence.

Kobia said the AP officers, who report directly to the county commander, should explain what happened that night because they were on guard.

Meru acting AP commander Pearson Ruteere said the officers who were manning the residence have since been transferred.

“We are shocked by the theft and investigations are ongoing. Anyone who participated will face justice," he said.

"The police will be on high alert to counter other such incidents, whether committed against citizens or government officers."

Residence caretaker George Nteere said he carried the keys to the Governor’s vehicle when he went to sleep at around 2am Sunday night.

He said he handed the keys to the escort car to one of the AP officers but found the bonnet open the next morning.

Nteere said he shut the bonnet and it was only when the driver tried to start the vehicle that he realised the battery was missing.

Speaking separately, county Lands and ICT executive Martin Bikuri said the robberies were intended to "sabotage operations of the government".

Bikuri told the media on Tuesday that two laptop computers and documents were stolen from the offices during a robbery last week.

"Since last year when I was impeached, the flow of events in my department is shocking. To date, there is no report of investigations even after all my officers and I recorded statements," he said.
