A police officer was killed after a matatu veered off Mombasa road and hit him on Sunday night.

"The officer was on duty when the vehicle from Mlolongo lost control and hit him," Nairobi police commander Japheth Koome

told the Star on Monday.

The police boss said the officer was injured but died shortly after the incident.

The body was taken to the City mortuary.

Koome refuted reports by Nairobi news claiming a traffic police officer was hit and killed by a speeding motorist while paving way for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s motorcade along Mombasa road.

"It was a normal accident. That is not true, the officer in question was not even a traffic officer but a general police officer," he said.

"How do you write such reports on social media, why do they even write the name of the officer before we confirm to the families? It is very unprofessional."

There have been series of accidents around the country even as National Transport and Safety Authority warned motorist against speeding.

On Saturday, after a boda boda collided head-on with a saloon car at Angorom on Busia-Malaba Road.

Two died on the spot while the other was pronounced dead on arrival at Busia County Referral Hospital.
