BONDO residents yesterday performed a Tero Buru ritual to commemorate the death of Cord leader Raila Odinga’s son Fidel.

They sprinkled changaa and busaa and slaughtered a goat to ‘share’ with Fidel “who is thirsty”.

The ritual is performed by a deceased’s age-mates to chase away evil spirits.

Dirges are sang and spears wielded to break spells that could haunt the family.

Residents waved twigs and placards as they marched around the Odinga’s home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

They proceeded to Fidel’s grave where they chanted slogans saying Fidel was a hero.

They later assembled at his home where a goat and busaa (a traditional brew) was served.

“We are taking the brew to celebrate with Fidel as a sign of unity, a year after his departure,” team leader Otieno Ojuok said.

Fidel’s step grandmother Betty Oginga received them.

She said the ceremony honoured Fidel as a hero to his peers and society at large.

Oginga said Fidel’s peers chose to perform the ceremony before the actual celebration of his first anniversary today.

Family members, led by Raila, held an interdenominational prayer service at his Opoda Farm in Bondo.

Villagers flocked to the farm to witness the Tero Buru ceremony.

The ceremony is a culmination of today’s anniversary celebration of Jaramogi and Fidel to be carried out at their family home at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.
