A member of the Dock Workers Union wants secretary general Simon Sang to call elections.

“Sang issued a circular dated January 12, asking members to apply for membership of election rules committee instead of calling for elections,” member Geoffrey Mareko said in a communique.

“The whole exercise is contrary to the constitution of DWU and against Section 34 of the Labour Relations Act.”

According to Section 34 of the Act, elections for trade unions, organisations and federations are to be held every five years.

Mareko said the DWU last held its election in 2011.

“The Labour Relations Act requires the DWU to carry out elections between March and June this year,” he said.

Mareko said the elections are to start at branch level to national level.

Sang’s memo urged members to facilitate quick drafting of election rules and regulations before March but did not state the election date.

Mareko said Cotu elections should be held before August and supervised by officers from the labour department.
