Teachers’ unions officials in Mombasa county have protested against performance contracts and appraisals.

They are scheduled to begin signing them tomorrow.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Kilindini branch chair Dan Aloo accused the Teachers Service Commission of making policies without involving stakeholders.

He called for dismissal of TSC commissioners for violating the constitution.

“Anything you bring on board, either good or bad, must be subjected to procedure. We have told teachers not to comply,” Aloo said.

“We cannot accept the contracts when we have the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement dispute. Let the exercise stop until they address the matter.”

His Mombasa branch counterpart Johnson Kibuga said teachers will not sign the documents because the TSC has not presented crucial documents to the union to allay fears of punitive sections in the appraisal.

County TSC director Ibrahim Rugut said “the unions are not teachers’ employers”.

He said there is no hidden agenda in the contracts and they are meant to improve the quality of education.
