Eight magistrates were dismissed by the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board

on Thursday

over misconduct.

They include Bomet senior resident magistrate Timothy Okello, Siaya principal magistrate William Chepseba and Kericho magistrate Jacinta Dibondo.

The others are Samuel Mogaka, Roselyn Oganyo, Jessi Njagi, Lucy Kathure and Theresia Matheka.

Okello was dismissed for issuing a dishonoured cheque,

board chairman Sharad Rao said, adding this could lead to cases of compromise.

Chepseba was accused of "rushing through rulings" and is said to have a deposit higher than his salary in his bank account.

Dibondo allegedly received a Sh70,000 bribe to influence a case and also had unexplained bank deposits of up to Sh1 million.

Mogaka's account was overdrawn, Rao said, and explained that this could also lead to cases of compromise.

Njagi and Kathure were reported as having unexplained sums of money in their accounts.

The board said Oganyo witheld information and her conduct could not be excused. It said she lacked candour and was of doubtful integrity. However, there was nothing untoward arising from her financial records.

Rao

said the board will wind up the exercise in three months.

He said the vetting masterplan should be used by the JSC in handling complaints concerning corruption and other kinds of misconduct.

"The vetting structure should be adopted as the template for civil servants such as those at the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Immigration department," he added.
