Former world 3,000m steeplechase champion Milcah Chemos is back from injury and she is already focusing on the 2016 Olympic Games title.

Chemos, who won the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, skipped the Beijing show last year due to a spinal injury.

“I am happy that I have started my training after an injury locked me out of the Beijing show where I was meant to defend my title,” she said.

The athlete, who trains at Kapsabet in Nandi County was the first Kenyan woman to win 3,000m steeplechase gold on the world stage. She said her aim this year is to redeem herself and win at the 2016 Olympics set for August 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

“I hope I will pick up well in my training and be able to actualise my dream,” she said.

Chemos finished fourth at the 2012 London Olympic Games. “I picked the injury while competing at the 2012 Olympics but it became serious in 2014. I went to a doctor and results showed an inflammation in my hamstring muscles. I went for further check up in Glasgow in 2014 and the results showed complication in my spinal cord and that forced me to undergo surgery in India. But I thank God I am back on my feet again,” she added.

She has bronze medals in her specialty from the 2009 and 2011 World Championships in Berlin and Daegu.

“I am still weighing my training and I haven’t decided which races i will use for my build-up. However by April, I will have gained full momentum but my aim is to be in the Team Kenya for Olympics,” she said.

Chemos began her athletic career as an 800m and 1,500m runner before switching to steeplechase in the year 2009.
