A teenager said to have died in a case of drunk-driving

in Salgaa, alongside four others on New Year's Eve, was buried on Thursday.

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, who attended the funeral, announced the formation of a committee to address parents' concerns on such cases.

Kariuki, 17, had just completed his secondary education and was awaiting the release of KCSE results.

“This was a very young person in whom parents and the community had heavily invested in. A loss of such magnitude cannot be explained. All I can say is 'sorry' to the family,” he said.

“Be assured that we are doing something about this alcohol menace, reducing the number of bars in particular,” he said.

Authorities said Kariuki, Kevin Kamuru (19), Bill Kamau (16), Domini Mwangi (17)

and Derrick Mbugua (18) were drunk and drove recklessly.

The governor asked residents not to pass judgment

despite the circumstances leading to the deaths.

“I know it is very painful to lose five lives. Let us not judge because anyone can get involved in an accident," he said.

Three other boys sustained injuries and were treated and discharged from the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital.

They attended a funeral service at St Monicah Church alongside MCAs and religious leaders.
