Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba has threatened to go to court to stop secondary school heads in his constituency from charging high fees.

Parents countrywide have accused principals of illegally demanding extra fees.

Speaking to the Star on the phone on Monday, Namwamba urged the Education ministry to punish principals who have defied the state's fees guidelines.

“Should the ministry fail to address the issue as a matter of urgency, then I will move to court to stop the secondary principals from overcharging parents," he said.

The MP said exorbitant fees are a burden to parents.

On Saturday, the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association denied violating the government's directive.

Kessha chairman John Awiti said the proposed fee hike is meant to address a loophole in the guidelines.

“The provision was not clear that any extra charges to complete ongoing school projects should be settled by the administration,” he said.
