Three businesswomen were arraigned in a Kitui court yesterday for allegedly stealing Sh28 million from the Kitui county government through cybercrime.

Sarah Wangui, 39, Mary Waithera, 49, and Margaret Mutei, 36, are accused of hacking the county’s accounts at various banks between March and December last year.

They allegedly stole Sh4 million to Sh6 million at various intervals.

They appeared before Kitui resident magistrate Rose Ombata and denied the charge.

Prosecutor Joseph Mutia asked Ombata to consider “the colossal amount when determining whether to release them on bail”.

They were released on Sh5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.

The three were given the option of paying Sh300,000 cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on January 18 and heard on February 10.

County CID director Shem Nyamboki will testify in the case.
