Deputy President William Ruto has told leaders to stop using the squatter problem at the Coast as a vote-hunting strategy.

He instead urged county governments and the national government to partner to ensure every Kenyan gets land and a title deed.

Ruto spoke in Kilifi on Saturday when he met county opinion leaders.

“As a leader, you should not always complain of historical injustices. These things have no place in the current constitution,” he said.

He said the recent Supreme Court ruling on the mandates of the Lands ministry and the National Land Commission has led to the smooth handling of land issues.

“You must provide solutions because you were elected to do that. If you start complaining as a leader, do you expect the electorate to join you in complaining?” Ruto asked.

He said the government aims to make good its promises.

Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro said the government has agreed to pay for a piece of land in Kiwandani. He said most land issues arise when the general election nears.
