A special anti-corruption division at the High Court promised by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga will open on January 15, the Star has established.

The High Court Division on Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes will fast-track the hearing of corruption cases and economic crimes.

The CJ met President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in late September when he promised the special division.

Mutunga said henceforth in Nairobi, all disputes relating to corruption and economic crimes must be lodged and heard before that court.

“The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division of the High Court in Nairobi will have its own registry and it shall determine the categorisation of the matters that may be lodged and heard in the division,” Mutunga said in a gazette notice.

Currently, there are six divisions of the High Court: Criminal, Civil, Constitutional and Human Rights, Judicial Review, Commercial and Tax and Family.

This means that high-profile corruption cases may be transferred to the new court.

The judiciary has been criticised for slowing down the war on corruption with Uhuru saying the judiciary must act tough.
