The Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution winds up its operations today following the expiry of its term.

The Commission, chaired by Charles Nyachae, was established in 2010 after the promulgation of the constitution.

It was mandated to oversee the implementation of the constitution especially on the enactment of new laws and alignment of existing ones.

In a statement yesterday, CIC said that though a lot has been achieved, there is still more to be done to ensure the constitution is fully implemented.

"The challenge for our nation now in so far as the implementation journey is concerned, is how to consolidate the gains from the five year period and tackle the challenges to ensure that the process of implementation remains on track," Nyachae said.

He said CIC's mandate was to monitor, facilitate, coordinate and oversee while actual implementation is the work of the government "through its various arms and agencies".

"Indeed, this continues to be the case beyond the life of CIC, notwithstanding that as at the time of writing our report,
Parliament is yet to guide the country on the oversight of implementation beyond CIC," Nyachae said.

He urged Kenyans to be vigilant in ensuring the constitution is upheld and told all state organs to respect the rule of law.
