THOUSANDS of faithful have trooped to Kisumu city for Prophet David Owuor’s prayer meeting.
They started arriving in Kibos grounds on Friday evening from as far as Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi.
Others came from Rift Valley, Nairobi, Western and other parts of the country for the three-day meeting, which starts tomorrow.
More than 1,200 police officers have been deployed to secure the meeting.
County commissioner John Elungata said all officers on leave have been recalled.
Speaking to the press in his office yesterday, he said lawlessness will not be tolerated.
“Security is a collective responsibility and we are calling upon all the citizens to be their brother’s keeper,” Elungata said.
Elungata, who chairs the county security meetings, asked residents to cooperate with police to curb criminal activities.
The Kings Outreach Churches overseer in Kisumu, pastor Hellen Ochieng, said they expect many people.
She said it will be broadcast live.
“We urge sick people to stay home and listen to the Gospel of God on radio stations,” she said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu town yesterday, Ochieng said a special gate has been set aside for the sick to avoid a stampede.
She said on January 2, an interdenominational conference will be held in Kenyatta Sports Ground.
Public service vehicle operators have reported good business.
Most hotels have been fully booked until January 4.
Last year, more than 10,000 people, some from Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Europe, attended Owuor’s meeting in Kisumu town.
They braved the cold and rainy weather to attend the prayers.
