BUNGOMA Catholic Bishop Norman King’oo yesterday apologised to Christians over theft of the tithe and cash contributions by parish councils.

He called for transparency and accountability for every donation made.

The bishop spoke at the official opening of the refurbished St Rosa of Lima Amukura Catholic Church.

King’oo said allowances claimed by parish councils had become a burden to members of the church.

“Payment of these allowances to parish councils has seen most construction works started by various parishes fail to be completed,”he said.

“They also fail to account for most money,” he said. If a parish remits money to my office they should ask for receipt and come and tell members the same," King’oo said.

“It is bad to collect money for specific projects and re-channel it elsewhere.”

He said it is immoral to fail to pay a contractor in full for work done.

“It is an evil to live with debts for your conscience will never be free,” King’oo said.

Scores of Catholic priests, politicians and faithful attended the special mass.
