Two people die daily in Mombasa from HIV-Aids-related complications, a council has said.

The National Aids Control Council Mombasa coordinator said three people in the county get infected daily.

Julius Koome on Thursday said 65 per cent of new HIV infections are concentrated in nine subcounties in Mombasa.

The 2015 NACC report says women between 15 and 24 account for 21 per cent of the 100,000 cases of HIV infection.

Koome spoke at Lotus Hotel in Mombasa.

He said 44 per cent of sex between married couples leads to HIV infection.

Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir termed the statistics shocking.

Some 15.2 per cent of the prison population of men are HIV positive.

“Facts and figures don’t lie, the situation is really dire,” Nassir said.

He was the chief guest at the training programme to educate police how to handle drug addicts.

Koome said six per cent of drug users in Mombasa are infected with the virus through injection.

Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid said he will lobby for a needle and syringe education to reduce the infections.
