A humanitarian organisation based in the UK is building two-bedroom houses for villagers on Pate Island, Lamu county.

The island is largely occupied by the Boni community.

Al-Khair Foundation Africa will start the Sh30 million project in Bakhamisi village and extend it to more villages.

The residents live in poor conditions with no water, health services, education or food. They have no beds and their houses are leaking.

Founder and president of the foundation, Imam Qasim Ahmad, said they will build 28 modern houses and furnish them.

The project was launched on Tuesday in the presence of Governor Issa Timamy.

Ahmad said they will set up a mosque, a health centre, and an early childhood education centre.

He said he was touched by the villagers’ plight.
