A Githurai ‘doctor’ accused of sedating and raping his patients has been charged in Nairobi with rape.

Mugo wa Wairimu yesterday was also charged with 10 counts of operating unregistered clinics.

He allegedly raped a woman, named ABC to protect her identity, at his Prestige Health Care Clinic in Githurai 44, on November 1 last year.

Wairimu was arrested on September 10 at the Gitungo Hotel in Limuru, Kiambu county, in the wake of the rape allegation.

He was accused of operating a medical laboratory without a licence from the Kenya Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.

Wairimu was also accused of operating a pharmacy illegally and stocking and using unvalidated laboratory reagents.

Other charges state that Wairimu administered unknown drugs to ABC to overpower her and engage in sex with her.

He is also accused of employing an unregistered laboratory technician or technologist.

Wairimu is also charged with having and using an irradiation device without licence.

He denied the charges before chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo.

The prosecution opposed his release on bond, saying the man is a flight risk.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Jacinta Nyamosi said Wairimu might not turn up for his trial, if released on bail.

She said there were compelling reasons to continue holding him in prison until the case is concluded.

“Owing to the nature of the crimes that Wairimu is alleged to have committed and the vulnerability of the victims, it is in the interest of justice that the suspect remain in police custody,” Nyamosi said.

The prosecutor said Wairimu should also remain in custody for his own safety.

Wairimu’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta opposed the request.

He said it is the duty of the state to protect every citizen out on bail.

Wairimu was brought to court on September 25, but the prosecution pleaded for more time to conclude investigations.

He will remain in custody until Monday, awaiting a ruling on his bail application.
