An aspirant for Kericho governor has dismissed reports he has been approached to be the running mate of another candidate.

Speaking to the Star on the phone on Wednesday, Fredrick Kirui said he is up to the task.

Kirui, a director with Kenya Ports Authority, urged residents of Ainamoi, Belgut, Sigowet-Soin and Buret to support him.

Kirui said for many years, the larger Kipkelion region has lagged behind in development “for lack of strong leaders”.

He said Buret has produced many leaders.

Kirui said the county’s first senator, Charles Keter, comes from Belgut and Governor Paul Chepkwony from Ainamoi.

On September 11, 50 former councillors from Kipkelion East and Kipkelion West endorsed Kirui.

During a meeting at Tea Research Foundation of Kenya in Kipkelion East, they said the area “will be liberated from if the governor comes from there”.
