MORE than two million bags of maize from Uganda have been imported into the country in three weeks.

Grain growers say the imports will hurt farmers, who are about to start harvesting.

Paul Tanui from the association on Friday said the imports are expected to increase to more than five million by the end of this month.

The imported maize sells at Sh2,000 per bag.

Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba said: “If we only depend on maize, our economy will collapse.”

He spoke at the launch of the Trans-Counties Sacco Society on Friday at Kapsara market, Cherangany.

Khaemba was with Cheranganyi MP Wesley Korir, who said the imports will hurt local farmers.

During President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit last month to Uganda, it was agreed that Uganda will sell its surplus sugar to Kenya.

But many leaders raised doubts as to whether Uganda produces enough sugar for its use and for export.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga termed “dangerous and reckless” some of the trade deals signed by Uhuru and Uganda President Yoweri Museveni.

He said the government’s deals with other countries are “made through single sourcing and shrouded in secrecy”, and asked for the details to be made public.

But Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohammed said no such deal has been signed with Uganda.
