SOUTH Mugirango politician Gideon Moreka yesterday became the first candidate to declare his candidature for the ODM Kisii county chairmanship. Moreka who unsuccessfully sought the party ticket in last year’s by-election said the party needs young and fresh leaders.
Speaking on phone, Moreka said: “The party needs fresh blood to revive its fortunes in Kisii and I have offered my candidature.” Moreka accused some ODM leaders of failing to promote the party at the grassroots. He said as a branch chairman, he will seek the governor or senator’s seat in the county.
Senior politicians from the area including Public Works minister Chris Obure, assistant minister for Transport Simon Ogari and Bonchari MP Charles Onyancha have not declared their interest in the seat. In Bomachoge, Ogari is likely to face lawyer Joash Maangi and veteran politician Zephaniah Anyieni for the sub-branch chairmanship. This will rekindle political and clan rivalry between the three candidates.
However, in other constituencies, there is little or no enthusiasm over the polls which are slated for November 24 to 27. The party has already trained branch coordinators ahead of the elections which have been postponed more than thrice. Moreka called for peaceful campaigns and elections.
