Kamuchiri village in Mai Mahiu is currently a chaotic scene after flash floods and a landslide left behind a trail of destruction.

Vehicles in different parts of the village were swept away before getting stuck in the debris, leaving owners to count their losses.

This is even as residents continue to mourn 42 people who have been reported dead so far.

The rescue teams on ground said five vehicles were trapped in the mud but bodies had been retrieved.

"We expect the numbers to go up as the search and rescue goes on," an official said. 

Kenya Red Cross said the floodwaters originated from a nearby river that broke its banks on Sunday night.

The flash floods also swept off a number of homes in the village.
