Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has urged the government to suspend the lifting of GMO ban until a new Cabinet is constituted to relook into the matter afresh.

Osotsi said the public was not consulted before the decision to lift the GMO ban was made.

The lawmaker said those pushing for GMO products were interested in making profits without considering the health of Kenyans.

"The health for our people should be our top priority as leaders and not for self gain," Osotsi said.

"We want the directive suspended. Let's have what we call public participation first under the new Cabinet," he told the Star on the phone on Saturday.

The senator was reacting to President William Ruto's directives to allow GMOs in the country as a way of improving on food security.

The ban on genetically modified crops was imposed on November 21, 2012 following a Cabinet and presidential decree. It was lifted through a memo dated Monday, October 3, 2022.

Osotsi said the head of state in his manifesto said he would ensure food security through lowering the cost of farm inputs.

"The President said his administration is going to lower cost of farm input. Once the farm input prices are fair, Kenyans stand a better place to produce food," he added.
