Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron has told the government to fund the completion of the Koru-Soin Dam. The project had stalled due to inadequate funding.

Oron joined various calls by leaders to have the dam completed, saying it is the ultimate solution to the perennial flooding in Kano.

The MP claimed that money that had earlier been allocated for the dam's construction should be reallocated because they want to end the suffering of their people.

The MP was speaking in the Nduru area, Kabonyo Kanyagwal where he distributed food and non food items amounting to more than Sh400,000.

He noted that this was one of the areas that were adversely affected by the raging floods displacing more than 10,000 households.

A total of more than 60 bags of maize, blankets and soaps were distributed to the families.

"This is just a temporary measure to assist the affected flood victims, that's why we are calling and pushing for long-term measures such as the dam and construction of the dykes," Oron said.

Oron noted that he was a native of Nyando and knew well the struggles the people were going through.

"I was born here, I suffered these floods, but am now here to help our people, it has nothing to do with politics," he said.

He appealed to various elected leaders, well-wishers and stakeholders to join hands in helping the people affected by floods across the county.

"I am engaging other stakeholders and well-wishers on the same and we will be back to help out."

Jane Adhiambo a beneficiary of the donations requested that they be assisted with iron sheets to construct new houses after the flood swept away their homes.

Currently, those not within the camps have temporary structures constructed using iron sheets along the roads.

Tobias Wanje from Kanda Primary School where they were displaced noted that this was a good gesture from the MP.

"All we can say is thank you and we hope when the floods are gone, the government will do what is necessary and not wait for another menace to make promises again," Wanje said.

Currently, more than 40,000 people have been displaced by floods in Kisumu County according to County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo .

The numbers of households affected include Nyando, Kadibo, Kisumu Central, Nyakach, Muhoroni and Kisumu East subcounties.

More than 14 schools have been submerged within the Nyando constituency.
