The Sh100 million renovated Jamhuri garden recreational park in Kisumu has been opened to the public.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthews Owili, who presided over the opening on behalf of Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, on Tuesday said residents are now free to use the park.

The park has a newly constructed swimming pool, restaurant, benches, walkways and a perimeter wall.

Owili, who was accompanied by Kisumu City manager Abala Wanga, said the park provides good ambience to the public and urged residents to make good use of it.

"As a county government, we committed to delivering the planned projects for the benefit of our residents," he said.

The facility was closed to the public in 2020 for upgrade and beautification implemented by the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) and funded by the World Bank.

Wanga said parks promote active lifestyles, reduce health costs and strengthen local economies.

“It offers an environment for picnics and relaxation in a green spread out cozy blanket under the shade of ancient trees good for family and friends,” he said.

The park is among the KUSP projects that have been implemented in Kisumu. Others include Nyamasaria satellite bus park, non-motorised transport system and Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.

Other projects are Oile Market Park, Botanical Garden, Kisumu urban roads and construction of Kaloleni community centre.

Besides the park, Owili also opened a Sh256 million fire station to handle emergencies in the county.

He said the fire station will boost emergency services and ensure the safety and well-being of the people.

The station, which hosts the city manager's office, has advanced equipment, including specialised vehicles, firefighting equipment and communication systems.

The deputy governor said the station will enable swift and effective response to fires, accidents, natural disasters and other emergencies.

The county also commissioned the Sh111 million rehabilitated Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.

The facility has been proposed to be renamed Jaramogi Oginga Sports Ground.
