Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has called on President William to suspend some state projects and use the funds to address the flooding menace in the country.

He said some of the projects were of no value, especially now with the floods, which have displaced thousands of families in parts of the country.

Transport systems have also been affected. Savula cited projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway, which he said can be suspended temporarily to allow the government to tackle the flooding.

"We cannot be crying every time over floods in Budalang'i, Nyando, Nyakach subcounties, Nairobi and Machakos. As a country, are we bewitched that we cannot find a permanent solution to the perennial flooding," he said.

He spoke during World Malaria Day at Pawteng Primary School in Kisumu on Thursday. The deputy governor said floods were one of the major causes of malaria, as stagnant waters act as breeding areas for mosquitoes.

President Ruto, he added, should urgently reconsider some of the projects, which can wait and channel the funds to mitigate the impacts of flood.

"The heavy rains in the country have caused havoc exposing Kenyans to malaria and water diseases must be tackled effectively through finding solutions to ongoing flooding," Savula said.

He pointed out that the government should construct dykes and dams in flood-prone areas to control perennial flooding and use the waters for agriculture.

Savula further called on collaboration with the national government to effectively fulfil projects and initiatives targeted at improving the livelihood of Kenyans.

He urged citizens to fully support Ruto's government for development growth saying he is the sitting president until 2027.

"The reality is that Ruto is the president whether you like it or not, whether we cry or laugh. Therefore, we should support him to help transform the country's economy," Savula said

He lauded President Ruto for supporting Raila Odinga's Africa Union Commission bid, which should be emulated by all Kenyans and unite the people towards safeguarding the gains the country has made.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili also called for a permanent solution to the perennial flooding in Kisumu and the entire country.

He challenged Ruto's administration to complete the Sh19.8 billion Koru-Soin dam project, cutting across Kericho and Kisumu counties, which targets to control floods.

Dr Owili said floods have displaced more than 5,000 families from their homes in Kisumu. Some of the families are in camps and evacuation centres.
