Reigning national champions Kenya Ports Authority title defence suffered a major blow as star guard Lennox Wanje was ruled out for six months through an injury.
The Porters’ starting point guard told the Star that he had been advised by the doctor to stay out of action for six months.
Wanje suffered a fractured arm during a game against Equity Bank Dumas in Nairobi but played more games before realising the extent of the injury.
“I was injured against Equity but it was not until after our league game in Mombasa against Eldonets that I realised how serious the injury was,” said Wanje.
The playmaker was admitted days later and underwent surgery. A possible return date, he revealed, would be next season after the first leg. “It is very sad that I won’t be able to play again this year. The injury has come at the wrong time for me just when my team needs me the most.”
He went on, “I am shattered with this injury coming just weeks before the teams start the playoffs. I can’t imagine this is happening.”
Coach Cliff Owuor must now figure out fast who among Gerry Wekesa, Sila Owuor and Simon Wambua will team up with Philip Tobias at the backcourt.
Wanjes asked the rest of the squad to play strong and never give up as the team sought to successfully defend the title. “I will support them from the bench. I believe they can do a better job even without me.”
Wanje was in Nairobi with the team during the Eliud Owalo Foundation-sponsored tournament as KPA beat Ulinzi Warriors 56-53 to bag bronze.
The dock men have finished their regular season fixtures and have 39 points. They are second to leaders Nairobi City Thunder who are on 42.
