Makueni County has launched a three-month book drive worth Sh105 million that will see over 40,000 children in Ecde centres access learning and instructional materials.

The MoU signed between the County government and the Text Book Centre on Friday is targeting all stakeholders to join the drive.

Chetan Rugani, Director and CEO of Text Book Centre, said that they will act as a collection centre for donors to achieve the objective of equipping Ecde Centres across Makueni County.

"We are proud to be helping learners achieve their sustainable goals with the supply of books and learning materials focusing on high rapid growth in the Primary level," noted Rugani.

Rugani said that the Text Book Centre aims to ensure increased access to quality education for all Ecde learners by Vision 2030.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr congratulated the move saying it will eradicate poverty amongst the neighbourhood.

"In these semi-arid zones, not even construction of infrastructure or development of any type will eradicate poverty. Only through instilling knowledge to our learners with a firm foundation will," noted Mutula.

He said that the County had recently distributed materials and books to ECDEs through the First Lady Anita Mutula's Foundation which then wasn't enough.

He therefore welcomed well-wishers to support the donation of books to make Makueni a better place.

Makueni Executive Member for Education Elizabeth Muli said that the County is so passionate about ECDE centres because they want to ensure that they cement a good foundation for learners at an early stage.
