Bungoma PWDs receive gadgets to ease movement, hearing

Wamalwa affirmed that the gadgets will help them move from one place to the other.

It’s a sigh of relief for People With Disabilities (PWDs) in Bungoma after the Red Cross, Bungoma County government and CBM Global Kenya disbursed gadgets to ease movement and hearing.

The assistive gadgets were received by Bungoma County CEC for Health and Sanitation Dr Andrew Wamalwa at Bungoma Red Cross offices on Monday.

Wamalwa in his address to the press lauded CBM Global for partnering with Red Cross and the County government in disbursing the gadgets to the PWD in the region.

“This is a great gesture to our country such partnerships will help our people live a good life,” the CEC said.

However, Wamalwa affirmed that the gadgets will help them move from one place to the other and continue with their activities.

He encouraged PWDs to form groups and go for County tenders noting that 30% of the County tenders are reserved for them.

The gadgets that were distributed included; a standard tricycle, APDK Auxiliary crutches mild steel, APDK Elbow crutches mild steel, BTE, Corset M & L, knee brace, protective glasses, shoe raise, surgical boots, triple cane, walking cane, walking frame, white cane, different sizes of special seats and wheelchairs.

Those with hearing impairment were also given hearing aids.

Wamalwa asked the beneficiaries to utilize the gadgets prudently adding that others will be distributed to Mechimeru Health Center in Bungoma South, Kopsiro and Chesikaki health facilities in Mt Elgon.

He noted that the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has commenced rehabilitation where PWD are screened to know the gadgets they need to get.

“There are different kinds of PWDs and it is the reason why my department has initiated screening services in the whole County to identify the gadgets needed,” Dr. Wamalwa said.

The CEC also said that Bungoma has hired 5 specialists who have been distributed in health facilities to offer rehabilitative services.

Dr. Jamila Salim, a Red Cross board member applauded CBM Global for picking Bungoma for the distribution of the disability gadgets affirming that they will help their mobility and execute their roles.

“The gadgets you have distributed today will go a long way in assisting our people to move from one place to the other,” he said.
