Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni wa Muchomba has asked Mt Kenya leaders to focus their energy on addressing the needs of ordinary citizens and not succession politics.

In a statement on Monday, the legislator said it is time for leaders to focus on development.

She said that with the skyrocketing cost of living, leaders ought to unite in making life bearable.

"This is not the time to start thinking or planning on who will be deputy president from Mt Kenya. It's time to get one man one shilling one vote for our people who desperately need it. Life has become unbearable," she said.

Her sentiments follow a move by a section of Mt Kenya MPs to back Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as a possible 2027 presidential running mate.

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu a week ago highlighted the importance of Murang’a’s recognition in national politics, advocating for Nyoro as a preferable choice over Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Nyutu accused Gachagua of possessing divisive behaviour and expressed concerns that such a choice might negatively impact President William Ruto's chances in the region.

"We will request Ruto to choose a young person from Murang’a who is Ndindi Nyoro; Gachagua has lost his ground, treating people disrespectfully, including elected leaders," Nyutu stated.

He insisted that the nomination process for the 2027 election should be impartial, without special privileges for any individual.

However, Gachagua on Saturday asked Mt Kenya leaders to unite, shun divisive politics and promote greater participation of the youth in productive socio-economic activities.

The Deputy President said there was a political scheme to divide the Mt Kenya region voting bloc.

He, however, said the schemers would not succeed in their mission as he asked the leaders to focus on the development and socio-economic growth of the people.

"I urge the leaders to be united and focused. Those scheming to divide the region should know that the people of Mt Kenya are intelligent and are aware of what is happening. Those seeking to divide us are enemies of the region. Our relevance in national leadership lies in our unity. We know what disunity and divisive politics did us in the 1992 and 1997 elections," he said while speaking at Kiambu Golf Club on Saturday night during a Thanksgiving ceremony for golf champion Michael Karanga.

Gachagua said he had embraced all leaders across the political divide irrespective of how they campaigned or voted in the 2022 General Election.
