Man killed in clashes between Wajir militia

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in armed clashes between two militia groups in Eldas, Wajir county.

The body of Mohamed Abukar Gedi, 38 was Tuesday morning discovered after he had been shot in Areswajir area.

Police said commotion erupted between the two armed groups from the Areswajir location and the Arbajan area in Wajir West sub-county. The cause of the altercation is yet to be established.

A team of police officers was deployed to tame possibilities of retaliation. The body was moved to the Arbajan area in the Wajir West sub-county pending autopsy.

Along Marsabit-Badassa road, Marsabit county, a herder aged 43 was shot and killed in clashes with cattle rustlers.

Denge Wario was shot and killed by bandits armed with AK47 rifles who had attacked Haro Mulata area as he and others were grazing livestock.

The five bandits attempted to drive the stock towards Marsabit forest but were repulsed by the quick response team.

All the livestock were accounted for, police said. The body was moved to Marsabit Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Police said they had deployed more personnel as tension remained high on Tuesday and Wednesday, amid fears of retaliation and more attacks.

The area is among those under operation by multi-agency teams to address the cattle rustling menace.

Authorities say they have acquired more equipment to enhance police operations.

Meanwhile, a police reservist is fighting for his life in hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the face in Laikipia.

The victim was among reservists on patrol in Borana conservancy on Monday when his G3 rifle discharged. The bullet hit his jaw exiting from the nose.

He was airlifted to Nanyuki Airstrip and taken by ambulance to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital for surgery

Police are investigating the incident.

Hundreds of armed reservists are used to guard conservancies in the area, which is prone to invaders including cattle rustlers.
