[PHOTOS] Murkomen assesses section of Lamu-Garsen road washed away by floods

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday assessed the state of the Gamba section of the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road that was swept away by floods.

Murkomen said that the volume of the water and the depth of the flow was still high, making it impossible for vehicles to pass.

"The situation has been worsened by the spillover from the Seven Folks Dam upstream, and experts expect this situation to remain so for some time," Murkomen said.

The CS said that the situation has forced travellers to use canoes to connect and complete their journeys from Mombasa to Lamu and vice versa.

"The disruption has also affected the movement of cargo from the Port of Lamu to neighbouring countries," CS said.

Murkomen said that they are exploring alternative routes to address the problem even as they prepare to begin the restoration of critical infrastructure across the country.

"An assessment of the damage caused by floods is almost complete, so we can talk to Parliament to set aside the necessary resources,"Murkomen said.

"We appreciate the private sector for providing the boats and for adhering to safety standards even as we look for a solution."
